Hong Kong's New Border Port Handles 100,000 Travelers a Day
If you travel to mainland China, your border crossing just got faster and less crowded.
Hong Kong's newly renovated Huanggang Port is expecting a surge of travelers over the three-day Chung Yeung Festival holiday, with daily passenger trips predicted to exceed 100,000. On Saturday morning, however, the departure hall was quiet, perhaps the calm before the storm. Security chief Chris Tang Ping-keung said the port has been running smoothly since reopening on Monday, handling about 80,000 trips a day, and even hitting 92,000 on Friday. That's a big jump from the 30,000 to 40,000 daily trips before the upgrade.
The expansion means you'll likely face shorter queues and less crowding when crossing the border. In fact, other border points like Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau have seen passenger numbers drop by 3 to 7 percent as travelers shift to the improved Huanggang facility. Tang expects the holiday peak to push daily trips past 100,000, and extra staff have been deployed to keep lines moving.
For anyone traveling between Hong Kong and mainland China, this is good news: a smoother, faster border experience. The upgrade effectively doubles capacity, which should ease congestion during busy periods. So if you're planning a trip, you can expect a more pleasant journey through Huanggang Port.
- Huanggang Port now handles over 100,000 travelers daily during holidays, more than double the previous capacity.
- Other border crossings like Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau are less crowded as travelers switch to the upgraded port.
- Extra staff are on hand to manage the holiday rush and keep lines moving.
Why It Matters
Faster border crossings mean less waiting and more time for what you're traveling for.
