Hong Kong college’s finance director arrested over HK$770,000 embezzlement
Bank flagged three suspicious transfers from college account to finance director's personal account.
Ray Yip Kam-chun, finance director of Hong Kong Chu Hai College since 2024, has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling HK$770,000 (US$98,262). The case came to light after the Bank of China alerted college president Jane Zhang on April 17 about three irregular transactions from the college's account to Yip's personal account. Zhang consulted the college's board of directors before reporting the matter to police on April 29.
Police arrested Yip on Thursday and later released him on bail pending further investigation. The Tuen Mun district crime squad is handling the case. Yip oversees the college's finances and has served in the role for about a year. The embezzlement amount represents a significant sum for a higher education institution, raising questions about internal financial controls.
