Hong Kong breaks ground on third medical school’s interim complex, 7 professors hired
New interim complex to welcome 50 students by mid-2028 in Hong Kong
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has officially broken ground on an interim teaching and research complex for its new medical school, the city's third. The eight-storey facility at HKUST's Clear Water Bay campus is set for completion in mid-2028, welcoming an initial cohort of 50 students. President Nancy Ip Yuk-yu announced that seven clinical professors have already been hired, with numerous overseas academics expressing interest in joining the faculty.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, highlighting the medical school's strategic role in aligning Hong Kong with China's 15th five-year plan. The plan supports Hong Kong becoming an international hub for high-calibre talent, particularly in healthcare and higher education. The interim complex will serve as a launchpad before the permanent Ngau Tam Mei site in the Northern Metropolis becomes available in 2034, deepening cross-border collaboration and contributing to a 'healthy China' initiative.
