VR Dog Ears Study: Passive Haptics Beat Active for Body Embodiment
Physical headband outperforms vibrotactile gloves when touching virtual dog ears in VR.
A team of researchers led by Omar A. Khan conducted a two-part study to understand how haptic feedback affects the sense of embodiment (SoE) when users wear non-human body parts in virtual reality, specifically dog ears. They first surveyed 63 members of social VR communities to confirm that animal ears are a common and personally meaningful avatar feature. Then, in a 2x2 within-subjects experiment with 28 participants, they tested two haptic modalities: active haptics delivered through vibrotactile gloves that buzz when the ear is touched, and passive haptics delivered via a physical headband that provides real touch resistance when the user reaches up. The setup involved participants in VR touching virtual dog ears attached to their own avatar's head.
The results were clear: passive haptics alone (the physical headband) produced the strongest overall embodiment outcomes, making participants feel as if the ears were truly part of their body. Surprisingly, combining active and passive haptics reduced the benefit—the glove's vibrations actually interfered with the realism of the physical prop. Additionally, the researchers found that embodiment toward the non-human ear part positively correlated with embodiment toward the entire avatar. These findings have direct implications for VR game designers, social platforms, and therapeutic applications: sometimes a low-tech solution (a simple headband) can create a more convincing VR experience than expensive haptic gloves.
