Half of all US employees use AI at work now - and waste almost 8 hours a week doing it
A new Gallup survey of 23,700 employees reveals a critical gap between AI adoption and effective use.
A new Gallup survey of more than 23,700 US employees reveals that AI adoption has hit a milestone, with 50% of workers now using it at least occasionally, up from 46% last quarter. Daily usage also rose to 13%. However, the report uncovers a critical 'integration-adoption lag': while 41% of employers have officially integrated AI tools, only 28% of employees use them weekly. This disconnect is compounded by poor communication, as just 26% of employees say their company has a clear AI integration plan, leading to low comfort levels and wasted time—nearly 8 hours per week.
The survey also highlights significant structural shifts within AI-adopting organizations. Companies actively using AI are 10 percentage points more likely to report major recent headcount changes (27%) compared to non-adopters (17%). These changes are most pronounced in small and medium-sized businesses (25-499 employees), where 39% of AI-adopting firms are hiring more while 17% are laying off more. Despite two-thirds of users reporting a productivity boost, only 12% feel AI has 'transformed how work gets done,' indicating it's currently a tool for accelerating existing workflows rather than reimagining them.

- A critical 'integration-adoption lag' exists: 41% of companies deploy AI, but only 28% of workers use it weekly, wasting ~8 hours.
- AI-adopting firms see 27% major headcount changes vs. 17% for others, with SMBs showing the most hiring and layoff activity.
Why It Matters
For leaders, bridging the strategy-execution gap is crucial to turn AI from a time-waster into a true productivity multiplier.
