Greg Brockman takes control of OpenAI products, merges ChatGPT and Codex

OpenAI merges ChatGPT and Codex into one unified experience under Brockman's leadership.

Deep Dive

OpenAI announced a major reorganization on Friday, placing cofounder and president Greg Brockman in charge of product strategy permanently. Previously overseeing products on an interim basis while Fidji Simo (CEO of AGI deployment) was on medical leave, Brockman now officially leads the company's unified product vision. In a memo to staff seen by WIRED, Brockman said, 'We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise.' The key change: merging ChatGPT, the AI coding agent Codex, and the developer-facing API into one core product team. Brockman noted that products are naturally converging, and Codex increasingly powers consumer and enterprise offerings with autonomous digital task execution.

Several leaders are taking larger roles. Thibault Sottiaux, who built Codex into one of OpenAI's fastest-growing products ever, now leads core product and platform teams and is involved in developing a forthcoming 'super app' that combines Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas web browser into a unified desktop application. Nick Turley, longtime head of ChatGPT (which grew to 900M+ weekly active users), moves to lead enterprise products. Ashley Alexander, former Instagram VP and health products lead, now leads consumer products. The changes follow last month's executive departures (Kevin Weil, Bill Peebles, Srinivas Narayanan) and come as OpenAI faces pressure from Anthropic in coding and Google in chatbots, with an IPO potentially later this year.
