Google Just Made a Laptop That Pairs Perfectly With Your Android Phone

Google just announced a new category of laptop called Googlebooks — machines designed to pair with your Android phone the way a Mac pairs with an iPhone. Five models hit shelves October 4, starting at $899 and topping out around $1,299, made by HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, and Asus. Preorders open today.

The pitch is pure convenience. Set up a Googlebook with your Android phone and your Wi-Fi networks, saved passwords, messages, contacts, and photos transfer over automatically. Apps get sorted into three tiers: "Made for Desktop" ones get a full laptop layout, "Optimized for Desktop" ones get roomier versions, and some apps, like Facebook, are simply judged "Better on the Website." A light strip called the Glowbar glows whenever you talk to Gemini, Google's AI assistant, and there's a dedicated G key on the keyboard to summon it.

Every Googlebook must meet Google's standards: a metal body, 16GB of memory, a touchscreen, a backlit keyboard, and at least 14 hours of battery life. Buyers also get a free year of Google's premium AI subscription with 5 terabytes of storage — roughly enough room for a million photos — plus a full decade of software updates, meaning the machine should stay safe and current until 2035.

The catch: this only pays off if you actually carry an Android phone. iPhone owners get nothing extra from these laptops. Google also says Chromebooks aren't going anywhere — they'll stay as the cheap option for schools and budget shoppers — and executives called reinventing the laptop a "multi-year endeavor," which is a polite way of saying the first wave may feel unfinished.
