Google’s AI search results will make links more obvious

Links in AI Overviews and AI Mode will appear with descriptions and images when users hover.

Deep Dive

Google, led by VP Robby Stein, is updating its AI-powered Search features (AI Overviews and AI Mode) to make cited sources more prominent. On desktop, hovering over a source triggers a pop-up showing the link, a description, and an image. Mobile will also get more descriptive link icons. This change aims to increase user engagement with original web content, addressing publisher concerns about traffic decline from AI summaries.

Why It Matters

This addresses the critical 'AI vs. publishers' debate by making it easier for users to discover and click through to original sources.
