Hassabis becomes chief scientist, while Jeff Dean leaves to launch a new AI company
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced a major shakeup of its AI leadership. Demis Hassabis, who led Google DeepMind, will become chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet's chief scientist, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs, which applies AI to drug development. Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly DeepMind's CTO, will step up as SVP of DeepMind and report directly to Pichai, also retaining his role as Google's chief AI architect. In another major change, Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and chief scientist of Google DeepMind, is leaving with Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to launch Discovery Loop, an AI-focused public benefit corporation. Google will be a "founding investor" in the new company. Discovery Loop's mission is to build AI solutions that automatically solve important problems in machine learning, science, and engineering, accelerating the pace of scientific discovery. The leadership transition signals a strategic pivot toward health and science as AI's next frontier, while keeping DeepMind's research momentum under new leadership.
