Google's New AI Lets You Search Your Phone Without the Cloud
Your photos, videos, and voice notes become searchable—offline and private.
Google DeepMind just released EmbeddingGemma 2, a new AI model that brings powerful search to your everyday devices—without needing the internet. Unlike most AI that relies on cloud servers, this model runs directly on your phone or laptop. It can understand and search through text, images, video, and audio all at once. So you could ask your phone to find 'the video where the dog catches a frisbee' and it would actually work, even offline.
Why does this matter? Because right now, searching your personal media usually means uploading everything to a company's servers. That's slow and raises privacy concerns. EmbeddingGemma 2 changes that by keeping everything local. It's also very efficient: the text-only version uses just 191MB of memory on a Google Pixel 11 Pro, and the full multimodal version uses 567MB. That's small enough to run on most modern phones. Plus, it can handle longer clips—about 5.5 minutes of audio or 29 images at once.
Google is already showing off what this can do. In their AI Edge Gallery app, a feature called Video Moments Finder can index your local videos and find exact timestamps for your searches. Another app, Foresight, uses meeting audio to enrich notes without sending data to the cloud. Developers can start building with this today using Google's MediaPipe and LiteRT tools.
The catch? The model hasn't been safety-tuned, so it might produce unexpected results. Also, performance varies across the 100+ languages it supports. But the bigger picture is clear: AI search is moving from the cloud onto your device, making it faster, more private, and more personal.
- EmbeddingGemma 2 runs on your phone or laptop, not in the cloud, so your data stays private.
- It can search across text, images, video, and audio—like finding a specific moment in your video library using plain language.
- The model is small and efficient, using as little as 191MB of memory, so it works on everyday devices without slowing them down.
Why It Matters
You could soon search all your personal media offline, keeping private data on your device and getting faster results.
