Google AI Studio now lets you vibe-code native Android apps
Prompt an Android app with AI Studio and install it on your phone instantly.
Google has upgraded its AI Studio platform to allow developers to build native Android apps using only natural language prompts — a move that dramatically lowers the barrier to entry for mobile app creation. Announced at Google I/O 2026, the feature lets users describe an app idea and instantly preview it in an embedded Android emulator. When ready, you can connect a physical Android device to your computer and install the app directly. Google plans to add the ability to invite external testers from within AI Studio in a future update. However, the company is tempering expectations: the initial release is focused on “personal utility” apps like habit trackers and study quizzes, “hardware-enabled experiences” that leverage the camera or GPS, and “AI-powered experiences” built on Gemini's API. This isn’t a free pass to publish anything — any app submitted to Google Play must still pass the platform's existing quality and review standards, according to Google spokesperson Mia Carter.
Alongside the AI Studio update, Google introduced several other developer-focused features at I/O. The company launched version 1.0 of its command-line interface (CLI) for building Android apps, giving power users an alternative to visual tools. In the coming weeks, Gemini will begin surfacing app recommendations in response to user queries, and later this year it will also surface movies and TV shows. Google Play is also rolling out “Play Shorts,” a short-form video feed about apps that will initially be available to users in the US and select developers. These announcements collectively signal Google's push to make Android development more accessible while maintaining quality control through its established app review processes.
- AI Studio now generates native Android apps from natural language prompts with an embedded emulator.
- Initial focus on personal utility, hardware-enabled (camera/GPS), and AI-powered apps using Gemini API.
- Apps must still meet Google Play's review standards; future updates will allow inviting testers.
Why It Matters
Lowers the barrier for rapid Android app prototyping while enforcing quality through existing Play Store review processes.
