Google adds AI Skills to Chrome to help you save favorite workflows

New feature saves custom Gemini prompts like 'suggest vegan substitutions' for one-click reuse on any webpage.

Deep Dive

Google is adding a powerful new layer of automation to its Gemini AI in Chrome with a feature called Skills. Announced Tuesday, Skills allows users to save their most-used AI prompts and apply them across different web pages without retyping. For instance, a user who frequently asks Gemini to suggest vegan substitutions on recipe sites can now save that exact prompt as a Skill. To use it, they simply type a forward slash (/) or click a plus button, and the saved prompt runs on the current webpage and any selected tabs. Google found early adopters using Skills for tasks like calculating protein macros in recipes, shopping comparisons, and summarizing lengthy documents.

To help users get started, Google is launching a Skills library with pre-programmed workflows for productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting. These can be added and customized. Like other Gemini actions, Skills will ask for user confirmation before taking actions like sending an email. The feature represents Google's response to a new wave of AI-native browsers from competitors like OpenAI (Atlas) and Perplexity (Comet). Skills begins rolling out today, but is initially limited to Chrome desktop users signed into their Google accounts with the browser language set to English (US).

Key Points
  • Users can save custom Gemini prompts (e.g., 'suggest vegan substitutions') as reusable Skills accessible with a '/' command.
  • Includes a library of pre-made Skills for productivity, shopping, and budgeting that users can add and customize.
  • Rolling out now to Chrome desktop users signed into Google accounts with US English browser settings.

Why It Matters

Turns repetitive AI tasks into one-click automations, saving time on common workflows like document summarization and product research.
