Google's Gmail Live lets you voice-search your inbox for key details
Ask your inbox questions aloud and get instant, sourced answers
Google is bringing voice-powered AI to Gmail with a new feature called Gmail Live, unveiled at Google I/O 2026. Instead of typing keywords and scanning through endless email threads, users can tap an icon in the search bar and ask questions aloud — like "When is my kid's show-and-tell?" or "What's my flight confirmation code for Detroit?" The AI surfaces the relevant details directly, pulling from the user's inbox. A live demo showed the system correctly identifying dates, locations, and other specifics from school and travel emails. Crucially, the feature includes source citations, letting users verify the information by clicking back to the original email. Google's VP of product for Gmail, Blake Barnes, emphasized that trust is central to the design, acknowledging that accuracy is critical for high-stakes situations like airport check-ins.
Gmail Live is part of a broader voice push across Google's productivity suite. Docs Live lets users talk through ideas with Gemini, which then helps structure documents and pulls in context from Gmail and Drive. Google Keep is also getting voice-driven capabilities to create reminders and grocery lists on the fly. These features will roll out on mobile starting this summer, exclusive to subscribers of Google's AI Pro and Ultra tiers (Keep launches first on Android). The announcement follows the earlier expansion of Gmail's AI Inbox (an email version of Google's AI Mode) to Pro and Plus subscribers. With Gmail Live, Google aims to transform the inbox from a static list into a conversational search tool, but the long-term adoption will depend on whether users find the AI reliable in real-world scenarios.
