A team from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan created a companion robot with a camera mounted on a gimbal — a small motorized base that swivels and tilts like a mechanical neck. Unlike older robots that relied on fixed cameras with a limited view, this one actively keeps you in frame. Whether you walk slowly or break into a run, the camera smoothly follows your movement.

The robot also solves a common problem: people change appearance over time. You might put on a jacket, move into a shadow, or turn around. The system uses continual learning, meaning it updates its memory of what you look like as it tracks you. It does this through person re-identification, a technique that lets the robot recognize "you" even when your look shifts. This prevents the robot from losing track of you during longer interactions.

In tests, the robot tracked people reliably from walking to running speeds and re-identified them in real time. What's notable is that it does all this without the person wearing any tag or marker. In user studies, participants found this more comfortable than wearable tracking devices. The findings were accepted for presentation at the 2026 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM).

This is still research, not a product you can buy. But it shows a realistic path toward companion robots that feel less like machines and more like attentive partners. Eventually, that could mean robots that keep an eye on an elderly relative, help a child with therapy exercises, or simply follow you around the house while you talk to it — no clip-on gadgets required.
