Gaza War at 1,000 Days: 2 Million Displaced Amid Stalled Reconstruction

The Israel-Gaza war has reached its 1,000th day since the Hamas-led attack on Israel that sparked the conflict. Over 2 million Palestinians remain displaced, living amid the ruins of what was once their homes. Israeli forces now control 70% of the territory after expanding from an initial 50% under a ceasefire that took effect on October 10. Entry and exit are severely restricted, and further ceasefire steps—including Hamas' disarmament and the massive task of reconstruction—have stalled completely.

The International Committee of the Red Cross regional director, Nicolas von Arx, stated this week: 'Much more needs to be done so that even a semblance of normality can come back, and we are far, far away from this.' Meanwhile, other conflicts have emerged in the region, and fragile ceasefires elsewhere show scars of persistent attacks. Both Israelis and Palestinians are weary from the strain. The fate of those in Gaza remains uncertain, with violence continuing—including recent strikes that killed a 10-year-old child.
