Your Boss's Attitude Shapes How Your Data Is Protected
New study shows company culture matters as much as laws for your privacy.
A survey of 156 U.S. information system developers examined the role of organizational privacy climate in the association between developers’ perceptions of the GDPR and their privacy engineering practices.
Using structural equation modeling, the researchers found that organizational privacy climate mediates the relation between developers’ perceived GDPR importance and their privacy attitudes, which in turn are associated with their privacy engineering practices. The mediation chain — regulation, climate, attitudes, practices — complements the direct effect of regulation on practice, according to the article.
- A company's privacy culture is crucial for turning data protection laws into real security.
- Developers with positive privacy attitudes build better protections — but only if their workplace supports it.
- When choosing apps or services, favor companies known for valuing privacy, not just following rules.
Why It Matters
Your data's safety depends on company culture, not just laws — choose wisely.
