French police detain 780 after violent PSG Champions League celebrations

French authorities detained 780 individuals after widespread violent clashes broke out in Paris and roughly 15 other cities following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory on Saturday night. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed on Sunday that 57 police officers sustained injuries, mostly minor, during the unrest. Incidents included fires, shop vandalism, and an attempted storming of a Paris police station. Nuñez stated that the situation was largely under control, noting that most celebrations occurred peacefully, but the worst violence concentrated around the Champs Élysées and near the Parc des Princes stadium where fans gathered to watch the match. Police also intervened five times overnight to prevent traffic blockades on Paris's main ring road.

In the Paris area alone, 480 arrests were made among the 780 total. The Paris prosecutors' office reported that 277 people have been formally placed in police custody, including 82 minors, on charges such as assaulting police officers, theft, vandalism, and disturbing public order. Nuñez emphasized that while the majority of fans celebrated peacefully, the scale of violence and property damage prompted a strong law enforcement response. Planned official celebrations for the team's win at the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower proceeded as scheduled on Sunday afternoon, under heavy police presence to prevent further incidents.
