French AI startup AMI (Advanced Machine Intelligence), co-founded by former Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, announced a $1 billion Series A funding round to develop AI systems that understand the physical world rather than just language. The round was led by five investment funds and included strategic investments from Toyota, Nvidia, Samsung, and prominent individuals like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. AMI was valued at approximately $3.5 billion before this round, according to LeCun. Within three to five years, the startup aims to produce 'fairly universal intelligent systems' capable of handling tasks like autonomous driving and robotics—applications where understanding physical dynamics is critical. The company has offices in Paris, New York, Singapore, and Montreal. French President Emmanuel Macron praised the move on X, calling it a new chapter for French AI. LeCun remains a professor at NYU and says AMI will focus on R&D for the first year, with potential corporate partnerships emerging within six to twelve months.
