In computer simulations comparing SHARP with three popular existing methods, SHARP was the only one that succeeded 100% of the time in every tested layout. The catch is that it needs significantly more computing power, especially in tree-like layouts. Also, when the team disabled the ability for robots to change plans mid-retreat, delivery times were 1.89 times slower—showing that flexibility matters.
Practically, this means warehouses could use denser robot fleets without redesigning their buildings. That could lead to faster order fulfillment and lower costs. The trade-off is the need for stronger warehouse computers to run the planning software. Still, for companies like Amazon, giving robots personal parking spots might be the simple fix that keeps everything moving.
