FDA says companies can claim "no artificial colors" if they use natural dyes

A major labeling shift that could transform your grocery aisle...

Deep Dive

The FDA announced companies can now claim products have 'no artificial colors' if they use natural dyes instead of petroleum-based ones, reversing previous rules requiring no added color at all. The agency also approved beetroot red and expanded spirulina extract use, bringing new natural color approvals to six. While natural colors aren't linked to childhood behavioral issues, experts note they're still additives in ultra-processed foods and their long-term safety is less studied.

Why It Matters

This change could lead to a wave of 'cleaner' labeled products, but may obscure the health realities of ultra-processed foods.
