Eyes on Many: Evaluating Gaze, Hand, and Voice for Multi-Object Selection in Extended Reality
New research pinpoints the fastest gesture for multi-selection in VR and AR.
A new study evaluated how to best select multiple objects in Extended Reality (XR). Researchers tested combinations of gaze, hand gestures (pinches), and voice commands for two steps: toggling multi-selection mode and then selecting objects. Results showed the 'DoublePinch' gesture for mode-switching paired with 'Gaze+Pinch' for subselection delivered the highest overall performance. Voice commands for selection were less favored due to being perceived as tedious. The findings provide empirical design guidelines for future XR interfaces.
Why It Matters
This research directly informs how future VR/AR apps will be built, aiming for faster and more intuitive user interactions.
