Everyone knows the awkward pause on a phone call with an automated system: you stop talking, it keeps talking, or it jumps in before you're finished. Today's voice AI mostly guesses when it's your turn using sound alone — listening for silence or a drop in volume. The researchers took an existing system that predicts future speech from audio and added visual clues pulled from Meta's Seamless Interaction dataset — a large collection of videos of two people talking face-to-face. The added signals included where people look, how they move their head, their body and hand posture, and "facial action units" (tiny muscle movements like a raised eyebrow or a tightened lip). They tested several ways of blending sound and vision together to see which worked best.

The results: adding visuals clearly beat audio alone. Interestingly, the facial muscle movements were the single most useful visual clue — more than gaze or body posture — though gaze and body still added extra value, and the model using everything together performed best. One honest caveat: the AI behaved differently depending on whether it was watching scripted, acted conversations or natural, unscripted ones, which matters because real life is never scripted.
