Now researchers have built ExpertLens, a tool designed to open that black box. It works with a popular AI design called Mixture-of-Experts, where instead of one giant system doing everything, a group of smaller specialists each handle different tasks.

ExpertLens creates simple visual maps of how the AI organizes knowledge. Think of it like looking down at a city: related queries and their relevant answers cluster into recognizable neighborhoods. It also identifies concepts the AI seems to care about, such as topics, writing styles, or language patterns. Using these maps, a human can see which specialist experts were activated and how that influenced the results. In tests on five different search benchmarks, ExpertLens showed that these specialists usually pushed relevant results closer together, making the AI more reliable.

The findings revealed something interesting: a few general-purpose experts do most of the work, while smaller, specialized experts handle niche language tasks. This means the system behaves less like a single mysterious brain and more like a team with clear roles. For everyday users, the practical benefit is transparency. Over time, tools like ExpertLens could let engineers pinpoint why a search system suddenly fails, bias, or returns irrelevant results and fix it before it affects people. It also gives regulators and auditors a way to check whether AI search systems are fair.

The honest catch is that ExpertLens is still an after-the-fact explanation tool, not a full understanding. It shows patterns and likely reasons, but AI models are so complex that even a clear map is still a simplification. It is a promising step toward AI that explains itself, rather than a finished solution.
