Social influence can make or break group decisions, even in AI systems
In a new paper, Yuyuan Liu and Xiaojie Chen model collective decision-making where individuals weigh both the intrinsic value of options and neighbors’ choices. They find that social influence can amplify the advantage of a superior option or compensate for the deficiency of an inferior one, and that a network’s average degree has a dual effect on outcomes. On dynamic networks, outcomes depend on both each configuration’s average degree and its expected duration. Computer simulations verified the theoretical predictions on static and dynamic networks.
