Every AI website builder is now pivoting to the same product

The AI website builder market is undergoing a dramatic consolidation, with numerous startups abandoning their original premise. Companies like Lovable, Base44, Orchid (rebranded to Bud), and Trickle AI (now Happycapy AI) have all pivoted from generating static websites to offering nearly identical 'AI cloud computers.' These are persistent sandboxes in the cloud designed to host and run AI agents that can execute tasks, representing a fundamental shift from a content-generation tool to an action-oriented infrastructure platform.

This pivot is a direct response to market commoditization. The core capability of generating a website from a description has become a standard feature of large language models (LLMs), eliminating any competitive moat. The new strategic bet is that the real value lies in providing the computational environment—the 'computer'—for AI agents to operate within. However, the industry is already splitting into two philosophical camps: pure-cloud sandboxes versus hybrid models.

While most companies are converging on the isolated cloud sandbox model, a few, like Happycapy AI and Perplexity Computer, are exploring a hybrid approach. This model allows an AI agent to temporarily take over or interact with a user's actual local machine to access real software and local files. This addresses a key limitation of pure-cloud agents, which are siloed from a user's genuine digital workspace. The race is now on to determine which architecture—isolated cloud or hybrid local access—will define the future of AI agent infrastructure.
