Artificial intelligence is being hailed as a game-changer for brain scans, cutting wait times dramatically and reducing costs. But a sweeping review of 263 research papers by scientists in Australia, Vietnam, and the U.S. reveals a troubling blind spot: AI tools might miss dangerous details in MRI images.
The problem isn’t that AI can’t read scans faster than humans—it often can. The issue is that current safety checks focus on technical numbers like pixel accuracy, which can’t catch subtle but critical errors. For example, the study found that an AI might overlook a small stroke the size of a pea, which could change a diagnosis from ‘watch this spot’ to ‘you need urgent treatment.’
Worse still, most research teams aren’t having human doctors review the AI’s work to double-check accuracy. Only 18 out of 263 studies did this, and even then, the results were inconsistent. The study’s authors say this gap means we can’t yet trust AI to safely replace or speed up brain scans without better oversight.
