AI Fake Patients Helped Med Students Score Higher on Empathy

Medical schools have long trained students using "standardized patients" — actors paid to convincingly play a sick person so students can practice asking questions, delivering bad news, and showing they care. It works, but it's expensive and hard to scale: you need actors, training, rooms, and time. So researchers built a version in software. That distinction matters. The AI didn't make students smarter about disease; it made them better at the human part of the job — listening, responding, and making a patient feel heard. And it did so without hiring a single actor. The team also released their annotated transcripts and scoring data so other researchers can build on the work, a quiet but important move in a field where most AI training tools are closed and unexamined.

The catch: this is a preprint, meaning outside experts haven't reviewed it yet, and 100 students at one point in training is a small sample. An AI patient also can't fully mimic a real person's fear, long silences, or tears. So treat this as a practice supplement — extra reps before facing real patients — not a replacement for human bedside teaching.
