Reddit study reveals top struggles of epilepsy community via 24K posts

Researchers from Indiana University and Drexel University analyzed 23,944 posts from the r/Epilepsy subreddit to understand the main topics and challenges shared by people living with epilepsy (PLWE). Using topic modeling, thematic analysis, and psycho-linguistic analysis, the team identified five overarching themes: symptoms and triggers (including mental health, memory, sleep, and photosensitivity); treatment and healthcare experiences (medication side effects, understanding epilepsy); daily functions (independence level and financial struggles); seizure activity (auras and ictal symptoms); and support for PLWE (both giving and receiving support). The study also highlighted the top psycho-linguistic characteristics of posts across these topics, revealing differences in emotional tone and language use.

The findings have direct implications for designing better technologies to support epilepsy self-management. The authors argue that social media communities like r/Epilepsy provide a space where PLWE can be more honest about their struggles, making insights from these posts valuable for developing tailored digital tools. Key areas for technology intervention include personalized symptom tracking, medication management aids, financial planning resources, and peer support platforms that match users based on shared experiences. This work underscores the importance of leveraging real-world online conversations to create human-centered health technologies.
