Elements of Robot Morphology: Supporting Designers in Robot Form Exploration
A new toolkit is making robot design as easy as playing with building blocks.
Researchers have introduced 'Elements of Robot Morphology,' a new framework with five fundamental elements—perception, articulation, end effectors, locomotion, and structure—to guide robot form design. To make it practical, they created Morphology Exploration Blocks (MEB), a set of tangible blocks for hands-on, collaborative experimentation. Evaluated through workshops, the system helps designers systematically analyze, ideate, and reflect on diverse robot morphologies, moving beyond ad-hoc design.
Why It Matters
This democratizes advanced robot design, allowing faster prototyping and more creative, human-centered robotic forms.
