arXiv study of 2,169 educational videos finds 'short' is relative, not fixed

A new arXiv paper (2608.06932) from Yidi Zhang and colleagues at multiple institutions provides the first large-scale, systematic mapping of educational short-video research, a field that has grown sharply since the mid-2010s but remained fragmented. By applying bibliometric analysis, non-negative matrix factorisation topic modelling, and structured content analysis to 2,169 records indexed in Web of Science and Scopus through June 11, 2026, the researchers uncovered the field's thematic structure and how the term "educational short video" is actually operationalised across studies.

Among the 16 first-level topics identified, "Skill Development in Educational Contexts" was the largest and formed the field's structural core. "Video-Based Health Interventions for Attitude Change" and "Cognitive Load and Engagement in Instructional Video Design" combined strong recent growth with high citation visibility, while "Social Media Engagement Strategies for Education" emerged as the fastest-growing direction. The study also found that experimental and synthesis designs were more common in health-related topics, and that indexed descriptions frequently highlighted intended users, educational uses, learning content, and interactivity. Crucially, only 511 records reported a representative duration, and no consistent numerical threshold for "short" was evident. The authors therefore propose defining educational short videos as discrete multimedia messages combining words and visuals designed or used to promote learning, arguing that "shortness" should be interpreted relative to educational purpose, content unit, and surrounding activity—not duration alone.
