AI 'BridgeGuard' Checks Bridge Safety Faster, Even Without Internet

America has more than 600,000 bridges, and federal rules require every one to be checked against a thick official guide. Right now, people do much of this by hand — reading documents and matching details. That’s slow, tiring, and easy to get wrong, especially in remote areas with no internet connection.

A new research tool called BridgeGuard takes on that job with AI. It runs entirely on a small computer in the field, so it doesn’t need Wi-Fi or cellular data. The AI reads the official bridge inspection guide like a smart assistant, looks up each bridge’s records in a database, and reasons step by step to decide if the bridge passes or fails. Think of it as a super-organized inspector that never gets tired.

In tests using real data from Delaware and Texas, BridgeGuard correctly identified structurally deficient bridges with near-perfect accuracy — 99.77% in Delaware and 100% in Texas. It also provided a citation for every call it made, so engineers can check its work. And it’s fast: about 197 bridges per hour, compared to the manual process that often takes much longer per bridge.

BridgeGuard is still a research preprint, not yet deployed, and it was tested on only two states. But it shows how AI can make safety inspections faster, cheaper, and more consistent — which matters to anyone who crosses a bridge on their daily commute.
