Amazon's New Sign-In Lets You Try AI Tools Without a Credit Card

Amazon wants to make it as easy to start using its AI tools as it is to sign in to a website. Previously, developers had to go through a lengthy process to create an Amazon Web Services (AWS) account: verifying email and phone, entering payment details, and choosing a support plan. That could take time and deter individuals or small startups from trying SageMaker Studio, Amazon's platform for building and deploying AI models.

Now, new customers can sign up with an existing Google, GitHub, Apple, or Amazon account, or just an email address, in just a few steps. They don't need to provide a credit card (for most) or verify a phone number. Once signed up, SageMaker Studio is automatically set up in about 20 seconds, and users land in a ready-to-use environment. They also receive $100 in free credits that can be used across SageMaker AI services, including training models and deploying them. There's also a chance to earn another $100 in credits.

The free credits last for six months or until used up, and usage stops automatically to prevent unexpected charges. This builds on earlier improvements like faster environment creation (from 2 minutes to 20 seconds), pre-configured permissions, and one-click deployment from Hugging Face, a popular AI model hub. Now, individual developers and small teams can go from discovering a model to deploying it quickly, without the usual AWS setup hassle.

This move lowers the barrier to entry for AI experimentation, making it more accessible to hobbyists, students, and startups who might not have the resources or patience for complex cloud setup. It also puts pressure on other cloud providers to simplify their offerings. While the free credits are limited, they provide a risk-free way to explore powerful AI tools that were previously behind a paywall or bureaucratic hurdle.
