Amazon's New AI Takes Your Food Order on WhatsApp

Amazon just made it much simpler for restaurants to take your order over WhatsApp. Instead of building a separate system for apps, websites, and phone lines, a restaurant can now use one AI assistant to handle all three channels. You text a voice note or call the same number, and an AI agent greets you, takes your order, and confirms it — no app to download and no logins.

The system is built out of Amazon Web Services building blocks, and it comes with a special trick: shared memory. If you text a restaurant today and call tomorrow, the AI remembers you and your previous order. That fixes a common problem where every channel treats you like a first-time customer. The AI has access to the menu, your cart, and restaurant locations — and it can even figure out which branch is closest to you.

Amazon's announcement is a how-to guide, not a finished product you can use today. It shows developers and restaurants exactly how to build the assistant using Amazon Bedrock AI tools and the Amazon Nova 2 language model. The company says the design keeps WhatsApp separate from the ordering logic, so if a restaurant wants to add or remove a channel, the underlying system doesn't need to be rebuilt.

For customers, this could mean a more natural way to order: text "large pepperoni" on your way home, or send a voice note from the car. For restaurants, it's one back end instead of several, which saves money and reduces mistakes. The catch: your order history gets stored in Amazon and Meta systems, so privacy becomes part of the trade-off for convenience.
