When a team split evenly on a hard trial, using the brain-based signal to give more weight to members whose brains looked more reliable raised decision accuracy from 57% to 88% as the team size increased. But under low mental workload, this same strategy hurt performance. In other words, listening to your brain is only useful when your conscious mind is already stretched thin.
The finding matters because it's a caution light. Brain-sensing teamwork tools seem powerful, but they're situation-dependent. The researchers say these systems shouldn't be treated as a generic boost. Instead, they could be built to activate only during high-pressure tasks, like military command centers, surgical teams, or emergency dispatch.
