Scientists Build Digital Twins to Save Palace-Museums From Decay
Lasers and special cameras could protect priceless art from climate damage
Palace-museums — the grand historic buildings packed with paintings, tapestries, furniture and sculptures — are quietly losing a battle with time. Shifting temperatures, humidity and rising energy costs all speed up decay. A team of French researchers says the answer may be a 'digital twin': a virtual 3D copy of a real building that updates itself with live data from inside the palace. Their paper upgrades an existing risk-assessment method called EPICO so it can run on these digital copies.
Here's how it works. Hyperspectral cameras (cameras that see colours and invisible wavelengths your eyes cannot) scan walls and artworks to reveal subtle material changes long before you can spot them. LiDAR (laser scanning that builds precise 3D maps) captures the shape of every room and object. Meanwhile, ordinary sensors record temperature and humidity around the clock. Put it together and you get a constantly refreshed model where you can ask simple, powerful questions: which objects sit in the riskiest spots, and what conditions are slowly harming them?
The practical payoff is money and time. Preventive conservation — fixing the environment before objects get damaged — is far cheaper than restoring a cracked panel or a faded tapestry, and it avoids the heartbreak of losing something irreplaceable. The same approach could eventually help any old building, from churches to libraries, keep its contents safe as weather patterns become less predictable.
The catch is cost and complexity. Scanners, cameras and sensors are expensive, the data needs expert interpretation, and the paper describes a framework rather than a finished product you can buy. Small regional museums — often the ones with the least money and the most fragile collections — may be the last to benefit. Still, the direction is clear: before long, the best-defended treasures may be the ones with a twin watching over them.
