Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 pricing signals end of AI model subsidies

Anthropic's latest frontier model, Claude Fable 5, is priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens—double the cost of its predecessor, Opus 4.8 ($5/$25). The company initially included Fable 5 in its Pro, Max, and Team subscription tiers at no extra cost from June 9–22. However, on June 23, the model was pulled from those plans and switched to a usage-credit system, with Anthropic citing insufficient GPU capacity to bundle it at scale. The company plans to restore standard subscription access "when capacity allows," but the writing is on the wall: frontier models will no longer be included in flat-rate subscriptions. Users will pay per token, and subscriptions will only grant access to older, cheaper models.

The shift makes financial sense—subsidizing expensive frontier models was unsustainable—but it carries troubling implications. As Anthropic moves to a pay-per-token model for its most capable AI, a wealth and opportunity gap will emerge. Organizations and individuals with deep pockets will have unrestricted access to cutting-edge intelligence, while others will be relegated to older, less capable systems. This could widen existing inequalities within countries and between nations, especially as AI displaces jobs and destroys demand in certain sectors. The era of democratized frontier AI may be ending, replaced by a tiered system where the best tools are reserved for those who can pay the highest price.
