But a 'right' answer from guessing is very different from a 'right' answer from real understanding. A new research model called CE-KT tries to fix this by looking at how students answer, not just what they answer.
CE-KT uses clues like how fast a student responded, whether they used a hint, how many tries they took, and their past behavior. These aren't used as grades or measures of intelligence. Instead, they help the AI adjust what it learns from each correct or incorrect answer. For example, a quick wrong answer might suggest confusion, while a slow wrong answer after hints might suggest a different learning pattern. The AI uses this extra context to build a more accurate picture of what the student actually knows.
The model was tested on data from ASSISTments, a real online tutoring platform. It generally predicted students' future performance better than older methods, especially for incorrect answers. That's useful because wrong answers are often the most informative moments in learning — but only if you understand why the student got it wrong.
The honest limitation: these behavior clues are not direct proof of mastery or learning. A student who answers quickly might be guessing, but a student who answers slowly might also be distracted. The researchers warn that the model's advantage isn't consistent on every measure, so it's not magic. Still, it points toward AI tutors that feel more like real teachers — ones who notice when you're frustrated, guessing, or finally getting it.
