New AI Tech Makes Heart Scans Clearer and Smoother

Cardiac CT scans often look clear only at certain phases of the heartbeat, with motion artifacts elsewhere—especially in the right coronary artery. To address this, researchers developed Coronary Mask Guided Registration (CMGR), a method that builds a continuous-time 4D cardiac CT sequence from standard clinical multiphase reconstructions. It reduces artifacts while preserving heart motion, including the right coronary artery, and generates plausible intermediate frames between phases. In tests, CMGR captured coronary motion and shape better than representative image-domain registration methods and showed competitive performance for whole-heart motion. The resulting datasets could serve as pseudo ground truth for cardiac CT research, supporting system design simulations and reconstruction algorithm development.
