LessOnline Contra Dance: 55-Minute Acoustic Fun with Live Band and Simple Tunes

At the LessOnline conference in San Francisco—a gathering more akin to a Rationalist meetup than a traditional blogging event—Jefftk organized and called a last-minute contra dance that proved a hit. The all-acoustic band included Ben on piano, Jefftk and Aleks on fiddles, Catherine on sax, and a volunteer on cajon. With no microphones or amplifiers, Jefftk called the dances while playing, relying on simple tunes and shouting instructions. The setup was low-friction yet musically rich, as every instrument contributed to the live energy.

The dance ran for 55 minutes without breaks, though Jefftk gave generous pauses between dances to prevent attrition. Almost all dances were longways whole-set figures, including The Low-backed Car, Bridge of Athelone, Jacob's Potato, Charge and Drag, and the scatter mixer The Blob. By avoiding role-based moves and reusing figures across dances, even the majority of attendees with no prior contra dance experience could pick up the flow quickly. Jefftk noted that the simplicity helped dancers develop a natural sense of timing with the music, something that takes longer with more challenging choreography.
