New Trick Makes Sony Camera Colors Truer in Any Light

Ever notice how photos can look slightly wrong under different lights — a bit too yellow indoors, a bit too blue outside? That's partly because cameras and editing software rely on a "color profile," a set of instructions for translating what the sensor saw into the colors you actually see on screen. For serious cameras, these profiles come in a format called DNG, which can be tuned for more than one kind of lighting.

The problem: these profiles have limited slots. If you stuff in extra color-correction detail to make photos look better, you also disturb the baseline accuracy the camera maker carefully calibrated — like squeezing an extra book onto a shelf and knocking the others out of order. This new method, called Constrained Color Carrier, reuses the existing slots so the extra color detail fits without damaging the original calibration.

In testing on a Sony ILCE-7RM5 profile, the worst-case color error at the hardest lighting temperature dropped from 0.082 to 0.035 — roughly a 57% improvement — while staying inside the accuracy tolerance the author set. The numbers were computed using a mathematical color-difference standard called Oklab, which measures how different two colors look to human eyes. The saved profile files reproduced the results exactly, meaning the fix can actually ship in a real file format, not just in a lab.

The catch: this is a single-author preprint tested on one Sony profile against a Hasselblad reference, not a broad study. A simple alternative approach blew past the tolerance. And you won't notice anything until camera makers and software companies adopt it.
