New Tech Lets You Explore Maps with Your Hands
Imagine moving mountains on a tabletop map with your fingers or a pen — no touchscreen needed.
Large tabletop displays and multi-surface environments could make geospatial data exploration more collaborative, but touch-based controls can misfire and interrupt the flow. To find better options, researchers turned to active tangibles and styluses. In a gesture elicitation study, participants suggested interactions for 16 geospatial visualization tasks as part of a realistic collaborative workflow designed with geography and migration researchers. The result: a taxonomy of user-defined gestures for tangibles and styluses, plus a thematic analysis of how people experienced the tasks and interaction techniques.
