Autonomous Robot Co-STAR delivers dementia therapy at home, study shows higher adherence

Cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) improves quality of life for people with dementia, but a shortage of trained professionals and caregiver burden limit its use. To address this, researchers developed Co-STAR, a socially assistive robot capable of autonomously leading CST sessions in the home. The robot guides participants through structured cognitive activities without requiring a human therapist present, making therapy more accessible for those unable to attend clinical appointments.
In a one-week in-home study with 9 participants, Co-STAR achieved a session completion rate near 50%, outperforming typical caregiver-led adherence. Family members played a crucial role, often initiating sessions and sometimes joining the activities, which enhanced engagement. The findings, accepted at the IEEE RO-MAN Conference 2026, suggest that autonomous robots can effectively deliver cognitive therapy at scale, potentially expanding access to dementia care while reducing strain on informal caregivers.
