Anthropic's Record-a-Skill cuts research time by 95%

Anthropic's latest feature in Claude Cowork, Record-a-Skill, lets users narrate screen recordings to generate reusable AI skills—detailed prompts that function like programs within Claude. In testing, this reduced a multi-hour research workflow to just 30 minutes by automating tasks like sentiment analysis and quote aggregation from platforms like HARO and Qwoted. The tool leverages AI's ability to control computers, navigate apps, and make decisions, offering a more flexible alternative to traditional scripting, which often breaks with minor UI changes.

However, the feature isn’t without tradeoffs. Users reported high resource usage, slow execution times, and fragile control, especially when automations encounter unexpected UI variations. While Record-a-Skill simplifies complex workflows—like evaluating contracts or aggregating expert quotes—it requires careful fine-tuning and may not fully replace specialized tools or human oversight. The technology hints at a future where AI-driven automation adapts dynamically, but current limitations demand user vigilance.
