CIC revamps Sustainable Construction Award to drive carbon reduction in Hong Kong
New Low Carbon Citation and mandatory team submissions aim for measurable decarbonisation.
The Construction Industry Council (CIC) in Hong Kong has revamped its Sustainable Construction Award to accelerate decarbonisation across the building sector. Key changes include a dedicated Low Carbon Citation, mandatory joint submissions by full project teams (main contractor, consultants, specialists, and client), and a stronger focus on measurable sustainability performance. Entries must now include verifiable data from tools like the CIC Carbon Assessment Tool and Smart Waste Management Tool. The award aligns with Hong Kong's 2050 carbon neutrality target and national decarbonisation goals. CIC Chairman Ir Prof Thomas Ho On-sing called the award an "accelerator to showcase industry responsibility." The CIC identified site electrification, clean energy adoption, waste management, and high-productivity construction methods as key decarbonisation directions. The Low Carbon Citation covers public and private buildings, civil works, and repair projects, rewarding exceptional carbon reduction through materials innovation and low-carbon practices.
A standout example is Chinachem Group's Tonkin Street development, a Gold Award winner in 2023. It was the first private residential project using Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), achieving a 68% reduction in construction waste and 75% reduction in noise. The CIC also links verified low-carbon performance to green financing through its Green Product Certification Scheme, helping borrowers access capital for sustainable manufacturing. Ir Prof Ho emphasised the need for real implementation over empty talk, providing data and examples for the industry to follow. Applications for the 2026 edition close June 18, and the award now promotes coordination from design through construction, with judging also considering safety culture alongside environmental, social, and economic factors.
- New Low Carbon Citation recognizes exceptional carbon reduction in public/private buildings and civil projects.
- Mandatory full-team submissions ensure coordination from design to construction, using CIC Carbon Assessment and Smart Waste Management tools.
- Chinachem Group's Tonkin Street project (2023 Gold Award) cut construction waste by 68% and noise by 75% using Modular Integrated Construction.
Why It Matters
Hong Kong construction accounts for major emissions; this award turns green pledges into measurable, data-driven action.
