Chinese start-up Moonshot AI raises US$1 billion in funding round led...

Chinese startup lands $1B to rival OpenAI with 200k-character chatbot

Deep Dive

Beijing-based Moonshot AI has secured over $1 billion in a new funding round led by e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding and venture capital firm HongShan, the Chinese spin-off of Sequoia Capital. The round values the startup at approximately $2.5 billion, according to local media reports. Founded in 2023, Moonshot AI also received seed funding from HongShan and ZhenFund last June. The company is known in Chinese as Yuezhi Anmian.

Moonshot AI launched Kimi Chat in October 2023, a smart chatbot built on its self-developed Moonshot large language model (LLM). A standout feature is its ability to process up to 200,000 Chinese characters in a single context window — the amount of text an AI can reference during a conversation. The huge context capacity positions Kimi Chat as a strong competitor to similar OpenAI-style offerings in China. Alibaba's involvement underscores its strategy to back promising AI startups amid the global AI race.
