China unveils handheld coil gun that works like a ‘less deadly’ pistol
The electromagnetic weapon fires 1,000-2,000 rounds per minute with no muzzle flash or sound.
China's state-owned defense conglomerate, China South Industries Group Corporation (CSGC), has publicly demonstrated a miniaturized handheld coil gun, marking a significant step in portable electromagnetic weaponry. The weapon, also known as a Gauss gun, uses electromagnetic coils to accelerate metal projectiles to high speeds without chemical propellants. According to a report from state broadcaster CCTV, the compact device features a 30cm (12-inch) barrel, a laser pointer for accuracy, and is designed for one-handed operation. Its development represents a notable downsizing of electromagnetic cannon technology previously seen only in larger naval and experimental systems.
The coil gun is explicitly intended for stealth operations and law enforcement scenarios where non-lethal force is preferred. A key feature is its adjustable power setting, allowing operators to choose between disabling a target and more lethal force. It can fire between 1,000 and 2,000 projectiles per minute and penetrate wooden boards from dozens of meters away. Critically for covert use, the electromagnetic launch mechanism produces no muzzle flash, minimal noise, and leaves behind no spent shell casings, making forensic detection and auditory tracking extremely difficult. The model shown is an upgraded version from a test prototype developed in 2025.
- Fires 1,000-2,000 projectiles per minute using electromagnetic coils, not gunpowder.
- Produces zero muzzle flash, minimal noise, and no shell casings for ultimate stealth.
- Features adjustable power settings for scalable effects from non-lethal disablement to penetration.
Why It Matters
This portable tech could redefine covert ops and policing, offering a stealthy, tunable alternative to traditional firearms.
