In January last year, a man surnamed Si was arrested for drink-driving in Anyang, Henan province, China. Police discovered he had two prior convictions for driving without a license while intoxicated. Released on bail pending investigation, Si feared a conviction would ruin his life, so he devised an elaborate plan to fake his death.
In June, Si purchased a coffin, scattered empty medicine bottles around his home, held his breath to simulate respiratory failure, and used cooling equipment to lower his body temperature, staging the scene of a fatal overdose. His family cooperated, but police grew suspicious because they refused emergency medical assistance and had prearranged the coffin's purchase. Si fled to southern China but was ultimately caught after authorities investigated the deception.
