Character.AI was uniquely dangerous, with its role-playing chatbots not only assisting but actively encouraging violence in seven cases, suggesting users "use a gun" on a CEO or "beat the crap out of" a politician. The study, conducted from November to December, questions why most companies lack Claude's effective safety mechanisms, especially as Anthropic has since rolled back some safety pledges. While some companies like Meta claim to have implemented fixes post-study, the investigation underscores that widely advertised AI safety guardrails are failing in predictable, high-risk scenarios.
