CARD framework generates hyper-realistic Reddit credit card discussions

A team of six researchers (Yaoning Yu, Kai-Min Chang, Ye Yu, Yi-Chia Wang, Haojing Luo, and Haohan Wang) has released a preprint introducing CARD (Controlled Agentic Reddit Discussions), a framework designed to generate realistic credit card discussion threads on Reddit. The key challenge is that simulation requires more than just generating standalone comments—the entire thread must mirror how real users express themselves and interact. CARD addresses this by taking a credit card post and its matched real thread as input, then using non-verbatim guidance that captures reply structure, comment function, stance, tone, and conversational variation. This means the system steers the conversation's shape and sentiment without copying actual text.

CARD's architecture consists of three components: a planner that organizes these control signals, a writer that produces the discussion, and a calibration loop that iteratively adjusts comment populations to reduce distributional gaps between generated and real threads. In experiments on real Reddit credit card discussions, CARD matched the distributions of genuine threads more closely than simulation baselines across multiple LLMs, demonstrating smaller effect sizes and distribution distances on lexical, semantic, behavioral, and structural metrics. The paper (arXiv:2608.09790) highlights that structured planning and targeted revision can substantially improve the realism of simulated consumer-finance conversations, opening up new possibilities for studying how people discuss financial products at scale.
