No Cuff Needed: New AI Reads Blood Pressure From Face Video
Checking blood pressure could one day be as easy as looking at your phone.
Blood pressure checks usually mean a bulky cuff squeezing your arm, whether you're at the doctor's office or home. This new research from a team of computer scientists points to a future where a simple selfie-style video could do the job. Their AI, called CALM-BP, watches your face with a regular camera and measures blood pressure without touching you.
The trick is a technology called remote photoplethysmography, or rPPG, which detects the tiny color changes in your skin as blood pulses beneath the surface. But past systems were a bit like a calculator that just gives you an answer without showing its work. CALM-BP goes further: it uses simple language to describe why a video clip is reliable and how different signals combine. That makes the AI more trustworthy and easier for doctors to understand, not just a magic black box.
The system was tested on 81 volunteers, using forehead videos and synchronized blood pressure readings. The researchers also checked whether the language actually helps by running experiments with and without it, and by testing on other datasets. The results suggest that language helps the AI organize what it sees, not that it adds hidden extra clues.
There are still big hurdles before you can ditch the cuff. The dataset includes sensitive facial video, so it's not publicly available due to privacy risks. The number of participants is small, and this is early research. But the idea of turning any camera into a blood pressure monitor could eventually make screening effortless and catch hypertension before it becomes an emergency.
